Our country is celebrating the 129th birthday of the most iconic freedom fighter, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose as Prakram Diwas. It is the right time to know about some lesser-known facts about this extremely courageous, confident and committed son of Mother India:
1. Subhas was born in a very well-to-do family. His father was a leading lawyer in Cuttack, Odisha. He was the 9th child and 6th son among the fourteen children of his parents.
2. He was only five years old when Swami Vivekananda passed away, but as a young student, he was extremely impressed by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and his (Vivekananda’s) Guru Sri Ramkrishna Paramhansa.
3. While studying in Presidency College, Calcutta, Subhas even thought of joining Ramkrishna Mission as a Sanyasi due to his strong thirst for spiritual knowledge. Accordingly, he went to Belur Math to take blessings of Swami Brahmananda of Ramkrishna Mission. But the visionary Swami Brahmananda guided young Subhas suitably and advised him to serve the motherland by participating in social and national movements.
4. He secured 4th position in the prestigious ICS (Indian Civil Service) examination but resigned within a few months from the service to return to India in April, 1921 to fight against the British Rule.
5. Subash was elected as the President of All India Youth Congress in 1923. He also served as the Chief Executive Officer of Calcutta Municipal Corporation. Later he also served as its mayor in 1930.
6. He was one of the prime targets of the British Administration due to his effective political activities against the oppressive colonial power. As such, he was imprisoned 11 times by the British Authorities during his struggle for freedom.
7. Subhas Chandra Bose was elected as the President of the All-India National Congress two times - in 1938 and again in 1939. Ironically, Subhas had to resign from the post of President of Congress Party soon after his re-election in 1939 due to strong opposition from Gandhi Camp in Congress Party.
8. He is the founder of All India Forward Bloc - now an independent political party, which was actually formed in 1939 as a new faction within Congress Party to voice his opinion and continue his struggle for freedom.
9. Subhas set up the Free India Centre in Berlin and started Azad Hind Radio Station. It had news bulletins transmitted in English, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu, Pashto, Tamil and Persian.
10. The title "Netaji," meaning "The Respected Leader" was bestowed upon Subhas Chandra Bose in 1942 by German and Indian officials at the Special Bureau of India in Berlin.
11. Subhas coined the two most popular slogans during our freedom struggle - JAI HIND and DILLI CHALO
12. Netaji was one of the few leaders who liked and preferred "Jana Gana Mana... ..." as the national anthem composed by Rabindranath Thakur.
13. Subhas was the supreme commander of Azad Hind Fauj, also known as the Indian National Army or INA – a strong force of about 45,000 soldiers, among whom were Indian prisoners of war as well as Indians who were settled in various countries of South East Asia.
14. Netaji being the champion of women empowerment formed the women’s regiment of Azad Hind Fauj which was known as the Rani Jhansi regiment.
15. As the Head of the Provisional Government and Supreme Commander of the Indian National Army, Netaji hoisted the national flag of Azad Hind Government in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands on 30th December, 1943. It marked the symbolic fulfilment of Netaji's promise that the Indian National Army would stand on Indian soil by the end of 1943. Similarly, the national flag was also unfurled in Manipur later in early 1944.
