HOW TO STAY DEMANDING IN TODAY’S JOB MARKET?

Sunday, October 12, 2025

We all live in a dynamic world and change is the constant variable. In today’s LPG (Liberalisation, Privatisation and Globalisation) scenario the job market world over has been witnessing many changes. With the rising population, education and aspirations of people, the normal equation between job seekers and job opportunities has lost balance. To talk specifically about our country, the job opportunities in government and semi-government sectors have been shrinking even without the impact of AI. Now the majority of jobs are available in private and unorganised sectors. The traditional character of employment has also changed a lot. Now a smaller number of persons join one service and retire from there. Presently it is common to see persons changing their jobs three-four times within a span of ten years. No doubt, they also go through lots of uncertainties and unnecessary stress during this period. Yes, these are the hard truths of the present-day job market. But despite these challenges, there will neither be a shortage of job seekers and job getters in the country nor the persons who continue to understand and qualify for changing requirements of jobs available in the market. It is because the majority of our young people try to achieve success by rising to the occasion and fighting the challenges of life. Yes, they make it possible by understanding and implementing certain basic points in their day-to-day life. That is why they not only remain in good demand and secure good jobs, but also ensure decent growth in their job career. Alright. Let us discuss such six basic points.

1.Believe in yourself: Swami Vivekananda says that all powers are within you; you can do anything and everything. Just believe in yourself. The feeling of ‘I can and I will’ come from this self-belief. As such, do not ever feel low and always try your best to perform well with highest self-confidence. This has multi-dimensional benefits. In fact, whether it is a job interview or a promotion exercise or finding a solution to a complex problem in your workplace, your self-belief plays a defining role.

2.Smart resume: Resume is your main document to showcase your strengths - education, skills, experience, contact details etc. So, it should be smart and contain all the important information in an attractive and structured manner so that at one glance the recruiters or employers can know about you well and value your candidature for the job.

3.Embrace the changes of life: In your long journey of life, some changes do occur due to your own doing which you may control, whereas some occur due to external factors on which you can have little or no control. This happens with everybody. Successful people do not panic and take the changes as new opportunities, do objective analysis and make suitable strategies and roadmap to move forward with a positive and open mind. It is very simple. Just think of the changing seasons in our country and our suitable response to that as far as our dress, food choices and living habits are concerned. If you embrace the changes in your life and workplace in the same fashion, you will benefit a lot.

4.Stay aware: It is said that awareness is half the solution. Staying aware about the job scenario, job applied for, the company, the salary package and such other relevant aspects give you an edge over other aspirants or competitors. Yes, you should have good command on your subject and also have good general awareness.

5.Upgrade your knowledge and skills: In order to stay efficient and performing, it is necessary to keep on upgrading yourself. Keeping in view the job requirement and future challenges, you should plan and move ahead by acquiring suitable skills. If you are planning for a job change, then prepare in view of the prospective company and job profile. There is an old saying, 'All’s well that ends well.' As such, your exit from the existing job must be smooth and pleasant. Express your gratitude to all the colleagues and thank them whole-heartedly. Do join the new job with this positive attitude remembering the golden words that well begun is half done and first impression leaves a lasting impression.

6.Present yourself well: Organise yourself mentally. Be natural, simple, honest and courteous. Understand the question well before replying. Your response should be to the point and clearly understandable. Do not ever try to pose that you know the answer to a question which you actually don’t know. Instead, say sorry for not knowing the answer.

As always, I'm keen to know what you think on this subject. Hence, I request you to post your comments to share your valuable opinion.  (hellomilansinha@gmail.com)
