In the course of my professional engagements, I get the opportunity to meet different groups of people – from youths to senior citizens engaged in different professions or vocation or household work, and to observe their behaviour patterns. Experts say that our behaviour pattern takes shape because of genetic, upbringing and environmental factors. As such, it is observed that the children of good and well-behaved people generally possess good human qualities. Opposite of it is equally true.
But what is presently the ground reality?
Yes, from conference room to college; from workplace to schools almost everywhere we notice a lack of good behaviour and normal etiquette. The gradually increasing gap between creed and deed is baffling despite the fact that our culture has all along been to behave like a true human being. Ironically however, we use the word boss frequently in place of leader in today’s corporate culture based on hiring-firing principle in most of the cases. Almost all such bosses are found to be driven by their position and inflated ego, and fire their subordinates now and then, mostly without any reason or rationale. It has multiple negative impacts on the image of the particular individual; the company they belong to and most importantly on the morale of the workforce. Definitely, it reflects adversely in company’s balance sheet and market reputation.
It is worth contemplating that if the inter-personal
relationship is not congenial in any company, it will affect the work-culture
of the company and also the individual and collective productivity of the
workforce. Moreover, it has a negative bearing, direct and indirect, on the
mental health of the individual employee and family members. To say, their
stress level goes up which results gradually in physical indisposition
impacting the medical expenses of both the employee and the company. Let us
discuss these aspects a little elaborately.
Medical science does say that due to our bad behaviour with anybody, we are filled with negative energy at the first place which adversely affects our mood and metabolism. The saying as you sow, so will you reap applies fully in this matter and hence we are liable to receive the same behaviour in return. And when that happens, it disturbs our mental peace very badly. And if this situation continues for long, we may suffer from some stress-related mental as well as physical problems.
Leaving aside the people of
sadist nature, don’t those people including the individuals having
boss-mentality think for a while on these aspects of misbehaviour before doing
so with any person including their colleague? Why do they behave in this
fashion which significantly harms their subordinates as well as their
organisations at large?
Actually, those people who are weak from within;
suffering from inferiority complex and a sense of insecurity; in a hurry to get
everything more by crook than by hook and are stress prone, they are generally
found to behave badly or inhumanely. Yes, people who are aggressive and
suffering from a superiority complex are also in the habit of doing such
condemnable acts. It is observed that such people are normally not strong, are
guilty minded and insecure. They are found to be deficient as far as wisdom,
understanding and intellect are concerned. Hence, in order to cover up these
deficiencies and to show off being really strong and powerful, they talk
loudly, intimidate the people in general and adopt short-cut methods to justify
their position.
Therefore, it is very clear that no matter you wear costly and nice dress; you are very rich; you have degrees from renowned institutions or you can try to show off in the best possible way, but if your normal behaviour with common people is inhumane, negative and undesirable, everything proves futile and meaningless. In fact, good humane behaviour is the mirror of our life. Language, logic, smile and patience are its good friends. Good natural behaviour plays a defining role in solving even a complex or controversial national or international issue. The pages of world history are replete with such breakthrough stories which benefitted millions of people. As such, the experts of behavioural science are unanimous in their assertion that behaviour is something greater than knowledge, because in life there are many situations where knowledge fails, but good behaviour can handle the situation successfully.
As always, I'm keen to know what you think on this subject. Hence, I request you to post your comments to share your valuable opinion. (hellomilansinha@gmail.com)
